Joseph Wilson — known as Joe — is the founder and developer of Connept Kennels. The platform grew from an unusual but powerful combination: hands-on boarding kennel experience, professional Animal Management study and software engineering.

Before Connept Kennels was a software platform, it was an idea shaped by Joseph “Joe” Wilson’s real work inside a boarding kennel.
Joe started at the beginning — working as a kennel hand and gaining first-hand experience of how a boarding kennel operates day to day. That meant seeing not only the importance of excellent care for every boarded dog, but also the operational pressure behind it: busy handovers, changing bookings, detailed care notes, owner communication and the need for every member of the team to have the right information at the right time.
Those early lessons still guide the product today. Connept is not being designed from a distance. It is being shaped around the realities of the work.

Working directly with animals and alongside a busy care team taught Joe that strong operations and strong welfare are closely connected. When information is clear and routines are easier to manage, staff have more time and attention for the animals in their care.

A kennel rarely stands still. Arrivals, departures, care updates and owner messages need to move cleanly between shifts so that important context is never lost.

Learning the work from the ground up
The story began inside a working boarding kennel. As a kennel hand, Joseph experienced the pace, responsibility and practical detail behind every safe stay — from daily routines and dog handling to cleaning, feeding, observations, handovers and the constant flow of information between staff, dogs and owners. It showed him that good care depends on many small actions being completed consistently and communicated clearly.
Animal Management
Turning experience into professional knowledge
He went on to study Animal Management at agricultural college, building a broader understanding of welfare, responsible handling and professional care. The course added structured knowledge to the lessons already learned on the kennel floor and reinforced the importance of observation, accurate records and care tailored to each boarded dog.
Software Engineering
Learning how better systems are built
The next step looked like a change of direction: studying Computer Science with a focus on Software Engineering. In reality, it supplied the missing tool — the ability to analyse complicated workflows, design dependable systems and turn first-hand operational problems into clear digital products that can support a whole team.

At the time, moving from Animal Management into computer science may have seemed like a sharp turn. It became the starting point for something more focused: boarding kennel management software informed by genuine kennel-floor experience.
